First, though, why don’t we take a look at the history of this fantastic kitchen appliance that feeds the masses and makes amazing chefs of us all? There’s a great story of how the crock pot slow cooker actually came to be. It all started way back in 1940 when Irving Naxon, an inventor, received his patent for the “Naxon Beanery”, the basic prototype for the crock pot slow cooker we all know and love today.
Naxon had grown up listening to his mother’s stories of a bean stew she used to make when she lived in Lithuania. It was called “cholent” and its cooking protocol was guided by the Jewish holy day, the Sabbath. During the Sabbath, which ran from sundown on Friday night to sunset on Saturday, no one was supposed to do any work. The cholent would be put in the oven just before sunset on Friday evening, and then the oven would be turned off for the next 24 hours. The stew would magically continue to cook in the lasting heat of the oven and would be ready at sunset the next evening, just as the Sabbath ended!Naxon was so inspired by his mother’s story, he built something that could create the same effect, but even more conveniently.
