According to the Chow baking tips - canning jars can be boiled and baked in the oven without explosions, as they are built to withstand heat.

The basic recipe is as follows.

- 2 1/2 cups of fresh seasonal fruit

- 4 x .5 pint canning jars

- 1/2 cup flour

- 1/2 cup sugar

- 1/2 teaspoon of salt

- large baking dish & some dried beans

Place the jars into a baking dish with a bunch of dried beans at the bottom of the dish, and then bake for 1 hour at 350 F. Let them cool completely when done, and top with some whipped cream. You can easily screw on the tops and bring these to your next picnic in the park. They are easy to pack back home again too.

Some combination ideas:

* All berry

* Apple rhubarb

* Raisin, pecan
