What is it about layered cakes that just look so majestic and regal? Why not make this awesome 3-Layer Buttermilk Cake with Chocolate Frosting for someone special for their birthday or maybe just for any occasion! Three layer cakes have been made for centuries, people used to make their cakes with jam or fruit preserves as the filling in between layers, especially in England, and they still do use the jams or preserves in cakes. But also, using icing as the layers has been done for a long time too. The nice layers just look lovely and regal when you slice the cake open and take a slice out to serve.

This cake is a white cake with chocolate frosting, so you get the two different colours so you can really notice the nice layers. Some people think that making a three layer cake is too fancy, or too difficult to do, but it is just not true. Three layer cakes do take a little more time and patience, but really, it is just like making 3 separate cakes and stacking them on top of each other after icing them. So, really it is not that much more work, you just triple the recipes for the cake and the icing!

Three layer cakes were created so that you could have a slice of cake that had a good balance of cake and icing in every bite. Each layer having the icing or jam on it, makes sure that you get a taste for the cake as a whole without having to strategize how to get icing on ever bite of cake you take. There are so many different ways you can make three layer cakes too, you can even dye the white cake different colours and have the icing be different colours as well! Have fun with it!
