Boston Cream Pie

Boston Cream Pie is a lovely cake (yes, not a pie at all!) that combines a dense yellow sponge cake or pound type loaf with a vanilla custard in the middle then puts a dense icing of chocolate ganache on top. It is served very cold. The pie was created in Boston, of course, well over 100 years ago. Its very first derivation included a layer of almonds in the middle, which would add a lovely texture to the whole cake. Boston Cream Pie is the official dessert of Massachusetts, and has held that honor for about 25 years.

This recipe creates everything from scratch, which means a fabulous and unequivocal result. Nothing beats a well made home baked cake in terms of flavor or showcasing the culinary skill of the baker. And the recipe is clearly laid out and very easy to follow. There are three steps including the cake itself, the middle custard, and the ganache. Simply read over each part and go slowly through each of the steps and you will have a fabulous result. The blogger, Serena, illustrates how she puts her ganache on top, as a casual topping that drips over the side. This creates a lovely and easy topping that also looks great.

Cakes like this do take some time to make, first, because they are entirely made from scratch, but second, because they have multiple parts. Still, the results are well worth the extra effort involved in making them. The flavor of Boston Cream Pie is inimitable, and comes out of a long tradition of cake baking. The recipe here is wonderful and followed carefully, ensures terrific results. Try this recipe when you have an afternoon available to explore something new and fun to make.
