Cheesy Cabbage and Ground Beef Skillet was one of those dishes we used to enjoy when I was a kid and always ate in front of the television set. Sunday dinner was always much more formal and at the dinner table with napkins and proper table settings, but Saturday was the day and the meal that I liked the most. On that day, we always had some kind of comfort dinner, whether it was macaroni and cheese, a stew, chile, or some other simple meal such as this Cheesy Cabbage and Ground Beef Skillet. It was a favorite, just like the others, whether because my mom was such a good cook or whether it was because it was Saturday, I do not know, and now, does it matter?

This is an easy dish to prepare. Cook up the onions and garlic first in your favorite oil. Olive oil is one of the best oils that you could cook with for its special anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities. Few other oils measure up to olive oil for overall nutritional goodness. The cabbage can be lightly steamed before adding it to the dish or cooked right in the pan. Choose any kind of cheese that you enjoy but add it after you have browned the beef. Flavor this meat with whatever seasonings your family enjoys. You could choose thyme and bay leaf along with salt and pepper, as you like it. Once the meat is browned, toss in a few vegetables such as peas or diced red pepper. Either of these veggies adds a slightly sweet flavor to the dish that both complements and underscores the meal.

Serve this dish warm, as the cabbage is best that way. Put it in bowls so the kids can gobble it up while watching their favorite Saturday night television show, and start a new casual Saturday tradition in your house. Every one will drop in to share it, you’ll see. Enjoy.
