Classic Fried Cabbage Garlic Onion and Bacon Dish

This Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion & Garlic would be a great easy dinner idea or side dish for any meal. Sometimes it can be hard to come up with something to make for dinner. Especially after a long, busy day when you're just tired. That's when homemade meals like this come in handy to have in place. This recipe only takes 35 minutes to make from beginning to end, and you will end up with a great, healthy and yummy meal. All you need are some simple ingredients that you may already have in your kitchen already. Even if you don't have these ingredients, you can always go out and purchase them quite easily too. The recipe comes from Cakes Cottage and was posted by Dan. While everyone may not love cabbage, it's a great vegetable when it's cooked along side some other delicious foods like bacon and onion. In this recipe, you'll be using a full head of green cabbage, although you could try it with red cabbage and see how that turns out. You will also need some bacon which is best to get organic and pasture raised. This way the meat won't have a ton of antibiotics and hormones in it, and usually, pasture raised animals tend to have less fat in their meat.

Then, you'll also need an onion, a couple of cloves of garlic, salt, pepper and some other spices and you can also add in some carrots if you like. First of all, you'll want to cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until it's cooked well and it's also nice and crispy. Then, you can drain the excess fat from the bacon on a paper towel and chop into pieces. You can then use the bacon grease to cook up the onion and garlic until they are tender and fragrant. Nothing is more appetizing than the scent of onion and garlic cooking together. Next up you will add the cabbage to cook for ten minutes, so it gets soft and tender. The cabbage will also absorb the flavours of the bacon, garlic and onion really well too. Then, add the bacon on top, and you can also add in a bit of water to steam the cabbage. Once everything is all cooked and mixed together, you can add your spices and salt and pepper and allow that to simmer for a few more minutes stirring as needed. Taste it and add any more seasonings to get it to taste how you like it.

Once it's ready, serve it right away and enjoy warm. You could also serve this up with some sausages, chicken or potatoes. It would also be fine to leave the bacon out if you're a vegetarian or vegan and just add in some meat alternatives or more veggies. There are vegan sausages that actually taste great and would be a great addition to this cabbage dish, or there are vegan bacon alternatives too. One of the other easy homemade meals you can make that's similar to this easy dinner idea is messy cabbage rolls. Just sautee all of the vegetables like you would in this recipe and then add in tomatoes and some ground meat or no meat at all. This way you have the same flavours of cabbage rolls without all of the hard work of rolling up the ingredients.
