The term bean originally referred to the seed of the broad or fava but was later widened to include members like the common bean and the runner bean. The word is now applied generally to many other related plants such as Old World soybeans, peas, chickpeas (garbanzo beans or lentil). Broad Beans, also called fava beans, in their wild state the size of a small fingernail, were gathered in Afghanistan and the Himalayan foothills. Fava beans gained widespread notoriety in the movie Silence Of the Lambs when they were mentioned by the character Hannibal Lecter that was not only creepy but put them on the world stage. In a form improved, by cross breeding, from naturally occurring types, they were grown in Thailand, and other places in the region, since the early seventh millennium BCE, predating ceramics. They were put together with the dead in ancient Egypt along with other foodstuffs. It wasn’t until the second millennium BCE did cultivated, large-seeded broad beans appear in the Aegean, Iberia and parts of Europe. In Homer’s Iliad, an 8th century Greek Poem there is a passing mention of beans and chickpeas that were cast on the threshing floor. Beans are one of the longest-cultivated plants known to man. Broad Beans or Fava Beans in their wild state and smaller than a dime were gathered in places like Afghanistan and the Himalayan foothills. They have become part of many different recipes and with their explosive power are also the butt of many jokes and limericks as well. This wonderful recipe from Judy gives them another home and mixed with the wonderful pork roast and cooking for at least 5 hours if placed on high heat and 8 if on low they will blend together with the spices added and make a wonderful hearty meal.
