German Chocolate Cake Bars

German chocolate cake bars are a little twist on a very old classic, the German chocolate cake. The cake was invented, not by a German, but by an American baker, whose last name was German. The cake was originally coined German’s chocolate cake, showing the ownership relationship between the word, German, and the word, chocolate. Over time, however, the apostrophe and the ‘s’ got lost in the translation. Even today, it is surprising how many people still think there is some kind of chocolate that is German in origin. But not so.

Instead, this cake has some pretty delicious ingredients. The cake contains pecans, coconut in a usually boiled caramel frosting. It is fabulous. Today we use these combinations all the time, but at the time that German invented his chocolate cake, these ingredients were still quite new. So this cake is made from a mid-weight chocolate, then layered (often three or even four layers are used to make this special cake) in-between with a chewy and lightly crunchy caramel cooked frosting. Because it is cooked, it becomes slightly chewy, rather a bit like toffee (only just a bit) and so it is especially delicious contrasted against the chocolate.

These German Chocolate Cake Bars are a bit of a twist on this classic, layering the coconut and pecan in a mixture that gets baked on top of a brownie mix. The layers are quite attractive and chocolate chips are sprinkled on the coconut top to finish the whole thing off. This is an easy recipe, and quite a bit easier than the original chocolate cake it is based on. This might be a good place for a beginning baker to try his or her hand at a German chocolate cake. But do try it soon. It is a delightful dessert or snacking cake.
