This is a home cooked, comfort food recipe that the whole family will love.Ground hamburger is used to create the “steaks” in this easy hamburger steak recipe. The ground meat is combined with some simple but flavorful seasonings. When you taste this easy hamburger steak recipe you will be sure you are biting into a delicious and tender steak, but it is really ground beef. It will have all the flavor of steak but is much easier on the budget.

In Brandi’s easy hamburger steak recipe, you will find the recipe for the flavorful gravy that the hamburger steaks cook in. This best gravy recipe calls for Kitchen Bouquet. Kitchen Bouquet is a small jar of browning seasoning sauce used to add flavor and color to gravies and sauces. It has been on the market since 1873! If you can’t find Kitchen Bouquet and don't know where to buy bouquet, you can use other similar types of browning and seasoning sauces such as Gravy Master. These browning sauces contain a little bit of sugar which helps caramelize the meat and other ingredients (such as the onions in this best gravy recipe). It adds a nice rich flavor to gravies and sauces. You can make your own browning seasoning sauce by heating 1/2 c of sugar (brown or white) in a pot over low heat until it starts to melt and darken. Remove from heat and whisk in a cup of water to dissolve the sugar. Whisk in a teaspoon of beef soup base. Heat and stir until dissolved well. Watch out for splattering. Store it in the fridge for the next time a recipe calls for browning sauce.

From a nutrition perspective, if you are watching your saturated fat intake you can choose lean ground beef to make the hamburger steaks. Beef is rich in the mineral iron, which is a nutrient needed by your red blood cells to carry oxygen through your body. Plant foods like fortified cereals, breads and some leafy greens also contain iron. However, the type of iron that is found in red meat is the form that is best absorbed by the body and improves our iron status better than iron found in plant foods. In the case of red meat and iron, a little goes a long way! Meat is also rich in vitamin B12. This vitamin is also needed for healthy red blood cells. If we don’t get enough iron or vitamin B12 we feel tired because our cells are having a hard time getting all the oxygen that they need. There is also a lot of zinc in beef, as in this easy hamburger steak recipe. Zinc is a mineral nutrient that keeps the immune system strong and is especially important for growth during childhood. Brandi provides a link to some of her side dish recipes to serve with this hamburger steak and gravy recipe. Mushroom, asparagus or green bean side dishes pair wonderfully with this beef recipe.
