Homemade Ranch Seasoning

Homemade ranch seasoning is a wonderful blend of green seasonings like dill and parsley against full flavors such as garlic. This blend of seasonings allows you to make your own ranch seasoning, a great alternative to the commercial dressings. Blogger Brandie also gives a great recipe to make your own dressing. She suggests either mayonnaise or yogurt. Mayonnaise will result in a very rich dressing, also high in calories and fat. If you use a lower fat yogurt, the resulting dressing will be tangier, somewhat thinner and probably much lower in fat and calories. You can choose. Since the dressing is made from scratch either way, you can feel glad that your family is eating good food made in your kitchen.

Ranch dressing is the number one selling dressing in the United States, since it overtook Italian dressing more than 20 years ago. It was developed by an American in the early 1950s. Steven Henson and his wife owned and operated Hidden Valley Ranch, where the early experimentation and recipe development began. And, the results are clear. Americans loved it. Henson eventually sold the recipe, and today, a number of different variations on ranch dressing can be bought at your local grocery store. This recipe also suggests that you can substitute the dry buttermilk called for with skim milk powder. Look for dry buttermilk powder, if not found at the local grocery store, at almost any health food store. It keeps well stored in the fridge.

This homemade ranch seasoning does need to be stored in the fridge because of the buttermilk. Use it up within three months to ensure a fresh and delicious flavor in all your dressings. Enjoy!
