Cast iron is trending hard right now, with books being written on how to clean and care for your cast iron. Did you know that cooking in cast iron will actually increase the iron content in the food that you eat? At cast iron pan this is well taken care of will also be relatively non stick so you have to use less oil while cooking. Have ever seen a nice shining cast iron pan? This is the sign of a well seasoned pan which is basically non stick. Because of this you won't have to use as much oil to brown potatoes or sear your chicken. Want to season your cast iron pan? To do this cover the bottom of the pan with a thick layer of kosher salt and a half inch of cooking oil. Heat until the oil starts to smoke, being careful not to breathe in the smoke. Remove from heat and pour into a bowl. Use a paper towel to rub the inside of the pan until it is smooth.
With your seasoned pan, you are ready to make this yummy dip made of onions, butter, ham, and 4 different cheeses. Remember - to clean cast iron, never use soap. Simply scrub your skillet with a stiff brush and hot water and dry it completely. Check out the recipe below at the link to Buns in My Oven.
