How to keep your house tidy without really trying
Ever wonder how they do it, how some householders can keep their homes so clean while you, on the other hand, can never seem to keep up? Is there a trick to it? Is there really a way to keep your house neat and tidy without really trying? Yes, there is, and it’s not as difficult as you might believe. What are the tips and tricks to effortless housecleaning? This great article by Cori over at the Hey Let’s Make Stuff blog is a real eye opener.
Here are the secrets to an effortless neat and tidy home:
1. Avoid cluttering up your space. When you have too much stuff, you run out of places to store it; and when you run out of places to store it, you get more clutter. Try downsizing your possessions by asking the following questions – have you used it within the last year? Are you holding onto it for sentimental value? Would you buy it if you were shopping right now? Does it fit your living space? Does it fit you? And do you already have a similar item that serves the same purpose? Consider getting rid of items that you haven’t used recently, that you wouldn’t buy if you were out shopping right now, and that no longer fit you or your home. If they have sentimental value, then why not take a photo of them? That way, you’ll always have that keepsake, but in much more manageable size.
2. Find a home for everything that’s left. When all of your household items have a home, your space will be neat and tidy. Store it in the closet, on a shelf, in the basement, the attic, the utility room, or wherever there’s a little extra space for it – preferably where it’s easy to grab when you need it. The one thing that most people have trouble containing is paperwork, which seems to pile up very quickly. Remember to go through your mail and paper items once a week, recycle what you no longer need, and store the remaining important ones in the appropriate folders in a filing cabinet.
3. Getting your kids involved in clean-up time. If you have children, you know how tricky it can be to keep chaos from taking over your home. Once your kids are old enough, however, you can get them involved in putting their toys away at the end of the day, or at the end of any particular activity. Children love to help out Mom and Dad, and they can easily grasp the concept of everything having a home. Asking them to put all of their items away on a regular basis can be a fun game you can play together. Children also enjoy vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, and doing laundry – just as long as you make it fun.
4. Thirty-second time limit. If you have a particularly dirty area, set your timer for thirty seconds and do a thirty-second clean sweep. It’s amazing what you can do in a mere thirty seconds. If you take thirty seconds here, while you’re waiting for you computer to boot, and thirty seconds there, while you’re waiting for the oven to heat up, before you know it, you’ve got a neat and tidy home.
These are just four of the excellent cleaning hacks that will help you keep your house clean and tidy without really trying.
