How to Turn an Ordinary Boxed Cake into Crave-worthy Cakes

Usually, when it comes to cake recipes and dessert recipes, homemade recipes tend to be the very best. But when you're a busy person who's on the go a lot boxed cake mixes and other pre-made foods can be a real lifesaver. All you have to do is add a few extra ingredients, most of which you probably already have on hand and pop it in the oven to have a fresh cake in minutes. The only thing is, these cake mixes tend to taste a bit different than the homemade cake recipes you may be used to. This can be because they add different additives and preservatives to keep the cake mix shelf stable. Although, there are actually ways to make your boxed cake mixes taste like a homemade cake recipe. Jillee of One Good Thing By Jillee shares some of the great dessert recipes hacks that she's found over the years and that she will put to the test to see if they indeed work. One of the first ways to improve the flavour of a boxed cake mix is to add buttermilk to the mix in place of any liquid ingredients the boxed mix needs. The buttermilk gives the boxed cake recipes a richer flavour, and also makes it a bit moister too. If you would rather use whole milk you can do that too, it will also provide a denser cake in the end.

If it's a chocolate cake recipe you're making, surprisingly adding some brewed coffee in place of the water required in the recipe will give it a richer flavour. You can also add some dark chocolate chips to the batter to give the cake recipe more depth too. For lemon cakes, butter cakes, yellow cakes, spice cakes, and white cake recipes and mixes, just add in some lemon yoghurt as well as some buttermilk to intensify the flavour. This will also make for a nice, moist cake. Carrot cake is always a favourite, but the boxed cake mixes sometimes come out tasting bland. Jillee has the great suggestion of adding in some grated carrot to the batter before baking to give it more of a homemade touch. It might sound really weird but adding some mayonnaise to the cake mix batter will provide more moisture much like the yoghurt or buttermilk will. For a healthier ingredient option, you can substitute the oil for applesauce or any butter for coconut oil which is a much healthier option. Also, if your cake mix doesn't require eggs, but it requires milk you can substitute the dairy milk for any nut milk or even thick coconut milk to make it vegan. You can also get egg replacer at the grocery store too if you would rather not use eggs in your dessert recipes, or you can make flax eggs by mixing one tablespoon of ground flaxseed with two or three tablespoons of water and let it sit for 15 minutes before using. This will thicken up your recipe without the need for animal products.

Once you've taken the baked cake out of the oven, you can jazz it up by sprinkling some powdered sugar over top of it. Or, if you're using a store bought frosting which tastes particularly sweet you can add in some lemon juice to cut the sweetness a bit. You can also make some pretty awesome dessert recipes by adding in some extra ingredients into boxed cake recipes. If you get a spiced cake mix, you can add some apple pie filling into the batter and bake as usual and then serve with some vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
