Spelt bread is just one of the bread you can use for this homemade bread crouton recipe. Spelt bread is made with Spelt flour which is ground from the spelt grain. Spelt grain is similar to wheat, and it is high enough in protein and dietary fiber to make it a healthy ingredient in your baking recipes. Spelt grain has a mildly sweet and nutty flavor that works well in homemade bread recipes and baked goods. Spelt has a texture that is softer and lighter than whole wheat flour, so you'll find it lighter than whole wheat. When making your homemade bread recipes and baked goods you can substitute spelt flour cup for cup for the whole wheat flour in the recipe, and you can substitute up to half of the all-purpose flour in recipes. This is because spelt is lower in gluten, so when all-purpose flour is used you still want to keep half in the recipe to get the right structure for whatever you are baking. Spelt flour may be easier on the stomach than whole wheat, but it does contain gluten.
When going gluten-free, you want to become familiar with all the things that contain wheat. That means you will want to learn how to read labels because you might be surprised at just how many things have wheat in the ingredients list. Things like potato chips, desserts, ice cream (think cookie dough), pasta, and more. It's a good idea to get rid of the gluten items in your kitchen that way you can't cheat. And for recipes like this homemade bread croutons try using the ends of your favorite gluten-free bread. Also, you can use ends of gluten-free bread to make bread crumbs for your breading recipes, such as meatloaf, casserole toppings and fried chicken.
