This is a great chocolate frosting recipe to add to any type of cake whether its a chocolate cake or even a vanilla cake or perhaps for some cupcakes even. This easy frosting recipe makes delicious, smooth and buttery frosting that you won't be able to resist licking off of the spoon after you are finished making it. Frosting, as it is usually called in the United States is also known as Icing. As you may already know, icing is made out of mainly sugar with butter and some milk and in this case, some sour cream as well for extra creaminess. You can make all sorts of frosting recipes to get different flavours and even different colours of frosting just by adding in a few different ingredients. For this chocolate frosting recipe, cocoa powder is used to make it a dark brown colour with a nice, rich chocolate flavour. Vanilla frosting recipes include a hint of vanilla extract for a nice light frosting and strawberry frosting recipes include fresh strawberry puree or strawberry flavour and make the icing nice and pink. Vanilla frosting can be coloured any colour with food colouring, which is a dye that is safe to use in foods. You can make your frosting any colour of the rainbow and in fact, some people have even made tie dye frosting with all of the food colours.

Putting icing or frosting on cakes dates back to as early as the 17th century as it is recorded. People called it icing or frosting because of how the sugar resembled snow or ice. Sometimes people would just do a nice light dusting of powdered sugar on a cake, and some recipes still do this, but then the full on mixture of icing sugar, milk and butter came along which made the cake even more decadent. There were recipes that would top the cake with frosting and then put it in the oven for the frosting to harden, but most frosting recipes these days call for a frosting to be added onto a cake once the cake has cooled and the frosting is chilled as well. Frosting helps to add some moisture to the cake, and it adds another dimension of flavour to a cake as well.
