We’re really enjoying all of her recipes, and we’re really sure you’re going to enjoy them too – especially this one for Potato Gratin. It totally rocks! Alexandra’s mother, Alice Waters, was her greatest cooking inspiration as she was growing up, and still is to this very day. That’s why it’s no surprise that she’s dedicated this recipe to her. She says her mom has cooked this amazing potato gratin for every holiday since time immemorial – and it’s always a hit, no matter what it’s served with.

What exactly is potato gratin anyway? Well, “gratin” comes to us from French cuisine and it is a dish topped with grated cheese, egg, breadcrumbs, or butter, then browned slightly to give it a rich flavour and crispy texture. Imagine slicing your potatoes extra thin, topping them with simple spices, cheese, and a few other delicious ingredients, then browning the whole shebang in the oven! Doesn’t that just make your mouth water? We’re ready to go out and buy a bag of red potatoes! Also, there are a number of variations of this recipe that invite you to cook it with sweet potatoes, turnips, and celery root. So you can have a blast experimenting once you try it once with the potatoes. Or not! According to Alexandra, it’s so tasty with the potatoes, they never use anything else.
