Imagine biting into this rich chocolate brownie topped with whipped peanut butter topped with delicious chocolate syrup. OMG! My mouth’s watering just looking at the picture. It’s so true that chocolate and peanut butter go hand in hand! We already know a great deal about chocolate, but how much do we actually know about peanut butter – where it originated and how it got to be so popular here in North America?
First of all, peanuts aren’t actually nuts; they are a type of legume that first grew in the foothills of the Andes in Bolivia. The ancient Aztecs would gather peanuts, roast them, and then grind them into a paste. Although similar, this paste was probably a great deal thicker and grainier than the peanut butter we know today. However, it was probably a lot healthier too! Today we add sweeteners and oils to make it extra smooth and tasty. We also tend to process peanut butter using machinery that grinds the peanuts into their creamiest form.
Peanut butter was first patented in 1884 by a Canadian pharmacist named Marcellus Gilmore Edson in Montreal Quebec and was sold for just six cents a pound! Edson was the first to add sugar to the recipe in order to make it thicker, and he marketed his peanut paste to those who couldn’t chew their food very well - back in the day, we lost our teeth pretty early! We sure are grateful to these early beginnings for making peanut butter what it is today. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy scrumptious recipes like this one for Peanut Butter Brownie Dream! Yum. Now that we know the ancient history, let’s get cookin’!
