I had never heard of a John Wayne casserole before, so I wanted to see where it came from naturally. Interestingly enough, John Wayne published this recipe himself in a cookbook in 1979. The original was a meatless version, made with eggs instead, and a lot more cheese. Since then, many different versions of this recipe have come about, including this one, which obviously isn't vegetarian. It is also served at high school cafeterias as a weekly meal.
