When it comes to easy cooking, our slow cookers are our best friends. Not only do they make cooking meals super easy, but they also create the most delicious food too. Try out this yummy recipe for slow cooker sausage and sauerkraut. These are two foods that go so well together; you may even want to add in some potatoes or perogies to this meal, or, like Michelle, from the Brown Eyed Baker and her husband do; put it all on a fresh hot dog bun and enjoy. This was a recipe that Michelle's husband tried at a friend's house and loved so much that they asked for the recipe to make at home. The recipe is so simple and only takes 10 minutes or so to put everything together, and the crock pot or slow cooker basically does the rest of the work for you. The key ingredients to this delicious sausage and sauerkraut are the beer and brown sugar that is added to the mix. You add in some beer and brown sugar with the other ingredients to simmer and caramelise in the crock pot all day. Sounds good right? So if you're looking for easy crock pot meals, this one is definitely one of them.

Crock pots and slow cookers are basically the same thing, just called different names. In 1936, the device was invented by an inventor named Irving Naxon. He got the idea for his invention from his mom who shared her memories of a Jewish recipe she used to make called cholent. Cholent would usually be made on the Sabbath which is a day of rest for Jewish people. They would make the dish the day before so it would be ready and warm on the Sabbath. The first crock pot Irving created had a dish in an encasing which is much like the crock pot or slow cooker we know and use today. Crockpots were really popular in the 1970s up until the 80s when the famous microwave was created and made it even easier for people to heat, cook and reheat food in seconds. Since there have been new studies done on microwaves over the years showing the harmful side effects of the waves, people are returning to using their crock pots and slow cookers more and more again. The slow cooker is also a great way to make a meal without having to heat the house up with your oven, which is especially great in the summer time.

You could even try making your own sausages for this recipe by creating your own ground meat and seasoning it the way you like it then putting it into casings. Sauerkraut is a healthy addition to this recipe, and it is something you can also make at home on your own. You basically take a cabbage and slice it up into sheds. Then you make a brine out of salt and water which the cabbage sits in for days, allowing it to ferment. During the fermentation process, tons of good bacteria are able to grow, and the cabbage becomes a healthy tonic for the stomach. When you eat fermented vegetables, it serves as a great probiotic for your digestive system, providing your system with good bacteria it needs to survive and thrive. Having a bit over sauerkraut with each meal is very good for your health and can keep your stomach happy and digesting properly.
