Baking a cake can be a fun way to create something special to enjoy with you family and friends. Cake recipes go back to ancient Egyptian times, when their cake recipes consisted more of a bread like cake that was sweetened with honey and could have some fruit or nuts in it. It goes to show why cake baking is still such a popular thing to do, it has been a part of human life since way back. The way we bake a cake now, with refined flour and baking powder, which replaced the yeast that was used in baking back then, began in the 19th century. Now there are so many amazing cake recipes that you can choose from and some of the best cake recipes are on the internet like this amazing chocolate cake recipe.
Why do people make layered cake recipes though? Why go through all of the trouble of baking a cake twice and having to spread the icing twice too? Well, layered cakes started being created so that as people were eating their own individual slice of cake, they could have a bite of icing with every bite of cake they took. Sometimes people would put some homemade jam in the centre as a nice fruity surprise, it might sound a little gross, but it actually tastes quite good, even in chocolate cake recipes, especially if it is raspberry or strawberry jam. The original speckled egg chocolate cake recipe came from another blog called The Cake Blog, which Maryanne adapted as her own recipe and made in her own way. On The Cake Blog, the cake is bright blue in colour like a pretty robin's egg with all of the little brown speckles that you tend to see on a real robin's egg. But Maryanne chose to make hers brown chocolate icing instead of the blue vanilla flavoured icing and she just did the darker brown speckles that were made with dark chocolate liquid on the lighter brown icing which creates a really cool look for the cake.
You can even make your own little eggs out of fondant, or blow out the inside of an egg and dye them your preferred colours, or do like Maryanne did and make a sweet little nest and fill them with store bought chocolate eggs with a colourful candy coating. Don't worry this chocolate cake recipe doesn't require you to be an artist of any kind, you can really have some fun with this chocolate cake recipe.
